When major league hockey came to Indianapolis in 1974, no one
knew the sport’s two greatest players would one day wear the
Racers’ red, white and blue. But the Racers story is so much more
than just a launch pad for Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier — it is
a time when a rebel major hockey league shook the National Hockey
League to its core — and changed the game forever.
Journalist Timothy Gassen was there, and as writer and director he
now details the only firsthand account of the Indianapolis Racers and
their five-year run in the World Hockey Association.
The result of five years of new research, writing and production,
GRETZKY, INDY & THE W.H.A. (the first of the 3-part WHA Hall
of Fame video series) is the DVD box set that fans have waited for
as a tribute to the wild and colorful 1970s hockey era.
DVD DISC ONE features a brand new 50-minute documentary that
expertly chronicles Indy’s rise as a W.H.A. beacon, with newly
discovered footage of Wayne Gretzky’s first moments as a major
leaguer. Highlights from the 1977 W.H.A. All-Star Game and a bonus
vintage W.H.A. Fight Reel are also included. As DVD-ROM material
on DISC ONE, a revised electronic edition of the acclaimed 155 page
Red, White & Blues Racers book is included, along with more than
three hours of restored 1970s WHA radio broadcasts.
DVD DISC TWO features the most complete surviving game footage
of the Indianapolis Racers: The December 10, 1978 victory over the
visiting Edmonton Oilers — & Wayne Gretzky — playing in his only
game ever in Indy as an Oiler. Also on DISC TWO is the third period
of the April 7, 1978 game in Indianapolis vs. the rival Cincinnati Stingers.
"Gretzky, Indy & The WHA" is now in its second printing. This new edition of the 2-DVD set features new cover art, a new end-title sequence, a new DVD trailer, and improved menu navigation.
